Identidades cuestionadas. El pueblo maya de Guatemala ante el ALCA
Abstract
The current neoliberal globalization process has unleashed a phenomenon of cultural invasion from the global North to the South lacking reciprocity which has resulted in the destruction of cultural identities. Instruments such as ALCA/FTAA have contributed to this homogenization under the wily and Anglo-Saxon culture of the multiple identities and peoples of Guatemala, being the Maya peoples the most numerous and attacked. This article is aimed at analyzing the 3 main sources of vulnerability of Maya population in Guatemala: the crisis and its consequences in life conditions, exclusion and poverty; the State has fallen again into the monopoly of a Military leadership that concentrates executive, legislative and judicial powers; and the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), whose negotiation has been characterized by a lack of transparency and participation. Finally, this study points out the possible alternatives in order to face this “unique path”.
