CALL FOR PAPERS
The Deusto Journal of Human Rights is planning a special issue on “Religions, diversities and human rights: Public policies for democratic coexistence” for its 17th issue (2026).
This special issue aims to offer a framework for reflection and innovative proposals on the public management of cultural or religious diversity. Religious traditions have significantly marked the majority cultural parameters of the various Western societies, and these are faced with the need to manage the harmonious coexistence of people and groups that hold different beliefs, values, rituals or ways of life. In these diversities, religious identification sometimes plays an explicit role, while at other times underlies a more diffuse cultural conception or even hides under the label of secularism or laicism. In the democratic game in which majorities have, in principle, the possibility of imposing their decisions, it is necessary to incorporate approaches, methodologies or tools that allow for a sincere and real inclusion of minority perspectives. To this end, new public policies are needed, from the state to the local level, which provide new modes of management, participation and decision-making that incorporate the diversity of the religious base or tradition existing in our societies.
The issue aims to bring together reflections that promote innovative ideas or solutions for public policy from a multi- or interdisciplinary perspective. We welcome contributions from various social sciences like law, politics, philosophy, sociology, social work and communication, and those that combine interdisciplinary perspectives and approaches. At the institutional level, contributions from regional or local perspectives are particularly welcome, as well as those that analyse experiences or proposals that could be applied in different geographical or institutional contexts.
The Deusto Journal of Human Rights invites academics, researchers, practitioners and experts in the field to submit their contributions between 1st of September and 30th of November 2025:
